Creating A Backyard Spa Retreat

(NAPSI)—The cooler months of fall and winter are a great time to turn your outdoor living space into a mini spa retreat. Soaking away the stresses of the day can have many mental and physical benefits. To help, here are some tips for enjoying your backyard spa and keeping maintenance simple:

• Make your spa a place of refuge and peace. Twinkling candles around the perimeter can set the mood for romance or quiet solitude. Use sturdy pillars, container candles, votives or flameless LED candles. Or string strands of twinkle lights along the fencing and watch the light dance on the water’s surface.

• Use your digital player or computer to fill the area with your favorite music.

• Surround the spa with pots of fragrant flowers, such as lavender, phlox and roses.

• Try aromatherapy available in bottles or pillow packs infused with numerous aromas. Each aroma is said to offer specific benefits. For example, apple is thought to release feelings of love and wisdom, while honeysuckle is said to sharpen intuition and bring prosperity.

• Simple stretching exercises, combined with the warm water, can relax muscles tensed by the day’s stress.

• Host a “Girls’ Night In” spa party. Offer herbal-scented skin oils for after-spa application; a tray of steamed, soft washcloths wrapped around sprigs of rosemary for soothing eye packs; and hot-wax treatments for hands and feet.

• For a soft, soothing spa environment, try a bromine-free, chlorine-free sanitizer like SpaGuard’s Soft Soak.

• Have a stack of warm towels nearby to make leaving the spa a little easier.

• Hang decorative pegs for robes and use a wood deck box to hold towels and keep slippers dry.

• Preventing problems before they occur can keep your spa sparkling clear so you can enjoy it all season long. Test water regularly and use an EPA-registered sanitizer to protect bathers.

• Proper water circulation is important. Run the circulation system every day.

• Clean the filter every four to six weeks.

• To preserve surfaces and prevent dirt buildup, you can use Off The Wall Surface Cleaner and Spa Guard Cleaning Mitts. Both are designed to work specifically with spa water chemistry.

• Regular draining and refilling is also an important part of spa maintenance. How often you drain and refill your spa depends on how often you use it. Experts advise you to go by this equation: spa gallons daily bathers 3 = days between draining.

At-Home Skin Treatments On The Rise

(NAPSI)—While most people want smoother, brighter, more radiant skin, not everyone wants or can afford an in-office skin treatment. Fortunately, you don’t have to have one. There are safe, affordable products with which you can get visible results at home.

Dr. Jody Levine, a New York-based board-certified dermatologist, says, “While many could benefit from the use of an in-office chemical peel to achieve more radiant-looking skin, that’s not always an option. It’s in these cases that I recommend the use of a gentle at-home peel, like Algenist Triple-Action Micropolish & Peel, to provide the retexturizing and brightening agents the skin needs, without the risk of redness or irritation.”

Clinically proven to improve skin texture and tone, visibly reduce lines and wrinkles and boost skin radiance within just 10 days of use, “This peel is truly unique as it combines mechanical microdermabrasion with a chemical peel that is gentle enough to use up to two times a week. You are able to achieve the results you want without the side effects you don’t,” adds Dr. Levine.

You can find this product at, Sephora and QVC.

Take Aim At Skin Imperfections

(NAPSI)—When it comes to skincare, women and men are taking serious aim at enlarged pores.

“The obsession over pores has increased given the link between pore size and skin radiance. Everyone knows that the smaller the pore, the younger, tighter and healthier skin looks,” says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Jody Levine. While we can’t change our genes, Levine confirms there is hope for keeping enlarged pores at bay. “Properly caring for your skin and following a dedicated skincare regimen is a must in the battle against enlarged pores.”

Pore size is exacerbated by dirt and oil—both of which lead to inflammation and acne—so keeping skin clean is essential.

“Your skin needs to breathe, so remember to wash your face each morning and night to remove oils, makeup and so on,” she advises. “Avoid using harsh soaps on your face, as abrasive products can aggravate skin.”

Dr. Levine recommends a targeted regimen from Algenist Skincare’s Multi-Perfecting Collection for the ongoing treatment of pores. “The Pore Corrector Concentrate is a must-have for tightening pores, reducing discoloration, smoothing roughness and refining skin texture.” Independent clinical testing found the product smooths skin texture by 24 percent and decreases pore size by 10 percent.

It’s available at, Sephora and QVC.

Bald Is Beautiful

(NAPSI)—For many men—and the women who admire them—hair is overrated. Bald, they agree, is the new bold when it comes to men’s grooming.

The Problem

Unfortunately, ordinary shaving and skin care products don’t really meet the needs of those with bald or shaved heads. The skin on the head is very sensitive to nicks and scratches, breakouts, shine and the sun.

The Buzz About a Solution

To help men maintain this high-fashion look, a new collection of innovative necessities has arrived packed with effective, high-quality ingredients for superior hydrating, and infused with antioxidant and antiseptic properties.

These products gently exfoliate and thoroughly cleanse, leaving the entire head and face feeling totally clean, refreshed and revived. They tone and hydrate while eliminating and preventing shine, smoothing away fine lines and wrinkles and preventing dry patches. Called Bee Bald, it’s made with honey and bee pollen extract, which are healing and antiseptic, while protecting against pollution, UV rays and other inflammatory factors.

Caring For Your Skin In Winter

(NAPSI)—For many, cold weather can mean dry, irritated skin. In fact, it’s estimated that almost 20 percent of people in the U.S. suffer from severely dry skin or eczema—a general term that refers to skin that is inflamed, swollen and irritated. Red, itchy, irritated skin that doesn’t properly retain moisture is a common symptom of eczema. Fortunately, there are ways to help prevent eczema and treat it when it flares up.

Treat It Gently

It’s important to keep skin hydrated, especially when the temperatures cool down, and one of the easiest ways is to choose a rich yet gentle body moisturizer.

“Look for products containing urea and lactic acid, as well as ceramides or shea butter,” says Dr. Joshua Zeichner, Director of Cosmetic & Clinical Research in the Dermatology Department at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in NYC. “Expensive does not always mean better, and you can find an effective moisturizer in your local drugstore.”

For example, Cetaphil Restoraderm Skin Restoring Moisturizer is clinically proven to provide long-lasting hydration by helping repair the skin’s natural barrier function.

Help Your Hands (And Feet)

Frequent hand washing and use of antibacterial gels during flu season may prevent a cold but can cause dryness and irritation to skin, so try to moisturize each time after you wash.

Cool It With Hot Water

Nothing feels better than a superhot shower on a cold day, but it can actually harm the skin, stripping it of essential oils and leading to skin dryness. Stick to cool or lukewarm showers or baths and soak for only 10 minutes or less to avoid damaging the skin.

Also, choose a hydrating body wash, such as Cetaphil Restoraderm Skin Restoring Body Wash, which uses advanced technologies to help restore the skin barrier function and retain moisture. Pat—don’t rub—dry with a soft towel.

Seek Professional Advice

If your skin isn’t improving, it might be time to see a dermatologist. “A doctor can prescribe prescription anti-inflammatory creams to complement your daily cleansing and moisturizing routine,” says Dr. Zeichner.

Invest In A Humidifier

Dry heat from heaters in your home can wreak havoc on your skin. Opt for a humidifier to help add moisture to the skin by replacing moisture to the air.

Don’t Forget About The Sun

Even though it is cold outside, the sun’s rays can still cause sunburn in the winter. Be careful in the snow because UV rays can reflect off the white surface and burn unprotected skin. “Look for a facial moisturizer with an SPF of 30 or higher to protect your face and neck daily,” suggests Dr. Zeichner.
