Brushing Up On Heart Health

(NAPSI)-People with well-cared-for teeth may have yet another reason to smile. Experts say that healthy gums could help decrease your chance of heart disease, stroke and even diabetes.

But while most people know that brushing and flossing can help keep teeth clean and possibly prevent gum disease, far fewer know that orthodontics can play a role as well.

“If your teeth aren’t straight, they’re very difficult to keep clean,” explains Dr. Jack Devereaux, of Mississippi/Louisiana Orthodontic Specialists. “Crowded teeth can cause inflamed gums and allow bacteria and plaque to develop in hard-to-reach places. That can lead to infection.”

Dr. Devereaux is part of a nationwide affiliate of orthodontists called OrthoSynetics. The group, which works with more than 300 orthodontic practices nationwide, can help people find a qualified orthodontist in the area.
