How To Be All-Weather Water Wise

(NAPSI)-Whatever the time of year or state of the weather, there are steps you can take to keep your landscape lush and your cash in your pocket. Here are some practical tips to help you when temperatures cool:

1. Be rain smart. Adjust your irrigation system when the seasons and weather change. You can even install a shutoff device that automatically detects rain or snow.

2. Watch the clock. Avoid watering between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. to prevent evaporation.

3. Divide by zones. Different plants need different amounts of water. Divide your yard and landscape areas into separate irrigation zones so grass can be watered separately and more frequently than ground covers, shrubs and trees. Sprinklers and drip irrigation systems can be incorporated to achieve more efficient use of water.

4. Water only things that grow. If you have an underground sprinkler system, make sure the sprinkler heads are adjusted properly to avoid watering sidewalks and driveways.

5. Do routine inspections. Periodically check your sprinklers to make sure everything is working properly. A clogged head or a torn line can wreak havoc on your landscape and water bill.

6. Mow low. Drop your mower's height to 1½ inches to stimulate new crown growth.

7. Don't drown. The greatest waste of water comes from applying too much, too often--much of the water is never absorbed. Instead of watering for one long session, advise the experts at Rain Bird, a world leader in irrigation, use the "cycle and soak" method for sprinkler irrigation. Water in three four-minute cycles set about an hour apart to let water seep deeper into the ground and reduce runoff.

8. Learn more. You can find further tips and important irrigation information online at www.rainbird.com.

A shutoff device for your irrigation system that automatically detects rain or snow can help you save water and money.
