TECHNOLOGY IN OUR LIVES

High-Tech Skills Vital For 21st Century Workers

(NAPSI)-Increasingly, students who want a career that's challenging, rewarding and has the potential to last for years are plugging into careers in technology.

As technology advances, qualified technicians are needed to integrate the latest developments. More specifically, electronic systems technicians (ESTs), who make up one of the most rapidly expanding workforces in North America, are in demand to help install, maintain and upgrade the technology that consumers depend on in their personal and professional lives.

As the basis for so many hands-on-type professions--and with the new "green" jobs rising over the horizon--ESTs not only have the technical skills, but an overall understanding that is critical to the 21st century workforce. That's one reason professional training, with certification, is so critical.

To respond to this demand, the nonprofit Electronic Systems Professional Alliance (ESPA) launched a nationwide education and certification program, the ESPA Certified-EST, for those wanting to enter the technology workforce.

Getting certified with ESPA can open the door to a variety of technology careers. Developed by longtime industry educators and innovators, the new ESPA Certified-EST program consists of five fundamental areas: electrical basics; tools; construction methods and materials; wiring and installation practices; and standards, codes and safety practices.

Careers resulting from this training could include residential and commercial A/V, computers, lighting, automation controls, security, alarm, telecom, cable, satellite and various "green" technology jobs. These are the jobs that connect consumers to the conveniences offered by the modern world.

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association (CEDIA), and National Systems Contractors Association (NSCA) founded ESPA in 2006. The alliance is working with schools, employers, government agencies and parents nationwide to help students and those looking for a career change get on the EST success path.
