Fortunately, there are a numberof ways parents can keep their kids safe—and newlegislation may help. Every year there are 2,400 poolrelated drownings from various causes among kids aged 1 to 14. Drowningis the biggest accidental-injury related cause of death among children 1 to 4 in the U.S. It is the second biggest killer of children ages 1 to 14. In 2002 alone, 838 children died as a result of accidental drowning—enough children to fill a small primary school. Also use a selfclosing, self-latching gate to prevent a child from wandering into the pool area unsupervised. Hot tubs should be covered and locked whennotin use.
