trends Single Parenthood (NAPS)—Since 1970, the num- ber of “traditional” families (married couple, with children) in the United States has declined by 14 percent. In fact, today there are an estimated 11.9 million single parents in the U.S., with roughly 28 percent of the nation’s children living with just one parent. With each other’s help and support, single parents are redefining “family.” But no matter a single parent’s occupation, education, interests or socioeconomic status, he or she is likely to face some commonchallenges in raising children alone. As a result, many are seeking out others in similar situations— through an international organization devoted to the welfare and interests of single parents and their children. Parents Without Partners, Inc. (PWP) has more than 35,000 members in the United States and Canada, with members ranging in age from 18 to 80; most have teenage children. Individual chapters provide: Personal/leadership development workshops; e Educational programs and discussion groups on parent-child relationships, effective communi- cation, dating and self-improvement; and Recreational and adult social activities.
