The survey found that more than three-quarters of those 55 and older plan to stay put after retirement. The 2000 U.S. census reveals that one-fifth of the population (59.3 million) is 55 or older and 37.6 million will join their ranksover the next decade. “Simple design solutions can add comfort, convenience and func- tion for maturing adults,” says Michael Thompson, ASID, of The Design Collective Group, Jupiter, Fla. “Hardware with elongated handles, instead of knobs, makesit easier to open doors and cabinets.
