TCM ByThe Book: Lives On Film (NAPS)—Have you ever stop- ped to think how different life would be without the light bulb or what medical science would be without penicillin? Turner Classic Movies (TCM) is bringing the stories behind historical figures and technical advances into the classroom. This school year TCMis introducing students to some of the most influential people of the 19th and 20th centuries through the network’s educational initiative, TCM By the Book. TCM By The Book is the network’s commercialfree, cost-free educational pro- gram, offering classrooms the opportunity to record and usepreselected classic films in the classroom with free accompanying cur- riculum materials. This year’s TCM By the Book installment, Lives on Film, features six men and women whose contributions to society altered the course of history. They include Marie Curie (discovered radium), Louis Pasteur (father of microbiology), Thomas Edison (invented light bulb, microphone), Abraham Lincoln (16th U.S. President), A new educational program features the inspiring lives of six men and women who changed the world. curriculum guide contains a film synopsis and questions and activi- ties for before, during and after viewing thefilm. For example, before viewing Young Tom Edison, students are encouraged to researchthelives of contemporary inventors, scientists andvisionaries, such as Bill Gates and Sally K. Ride, and identify the traits they have in common with Edison. After viewing the film, students might explore how the microphone revolutionized the world of music by researching how Edison developedthe idea.
