President Lincoln Finally Returns To Richmond

—America’s Heritage aa: a President Lincoln Finally Returns To Richmond (NAPSA)—Abraham Lincoln and his son Tad are returning to Richmond, Virginia. A new bronze statue of Lincoln and his youngest child will be unveiled in Richmond on Saturday, April 5, 2003. The statue commemorates their only visit to the city on April 4 and 5 in 1865, just prior to the end of the Civil War. The United States Historical Society has commissioned the sculptor David Frech to create a life-size rendering of Lincoln and Tad, who was then 12 yearsold. The statue vividly commemorates an imagined, private moment during their historic 1865 visit of reconciliation. They are seated on a bench against a plain granite wall. The words “To Bind Up The Nation’s Wounds”will be cut into a granite capstone. Beside the President is a copy of the Richmond Whig, dated April 5, 1865. The sculptor has provided space on both ends of the bench for visitors to sit and be photographed. The United States Historical Society is donating the statue to the Civil War Visitor Center of the National Park Service in Richmond. The Center is on land that once served asthe site for the Tredegar Iron Works, an important supplier of munitions to the Confederate Army. The statue will be placed outdoors on a hillside in sight of The James River and the Richmond skyline. “Here is a national hero, a small boy, and a beautiful city by the James River, all united again. The Society is generating funds for the project by issuing a limited-edition of solid bronze miniature statues mounted on a marble base. Miniature bronzed resin copies of the original are also available. Proceeds from the sale of the miniatures will be used to defray the cost of the Lincoln statue.
