Renowned among thousands of bird-watchers, wildlife artists and researchers, it began in 1971 when Ralph Heath spotted an injured cormorant and carried it to a veterinarian friend who helped him nurse it back to health. News spread fast about Florida’s new “bird doctor” and within days other patients arrived. Today the Sanctuary cares for more than 10,000 injured birds.
