But nothing strikes nostalgia more than the smell and taste of a favorite recipe—it can take you back to an exact moment in time shared with special people in yourlife. And in America, special times are often celebrated with a cake— family recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation. Whetherit’s for a birthday, anniversary or just because, cakes are the key to showing someone just how special they are. Whirlpool, who has been building the ovens and ranges that cook these time-honored tasty treasures for more than 50 years, wants to learn about the recipes and hear the stories of America’s great cakes. The company hasjust launched its second annual Accubake Unique Cake contest, which brought in more than 400 recipes in its inaugural year. “Baking a cake is a way for me to share something very close to my heart with family and friends,” said Elizabeth Kisch of Dayton, Ohio, who wonlast year’s contest with her chocolate coffee toffee cake. “Nothing compares to the smell in the kitchen or look on people’s face when they taste a really great cake. That’s where my reward comesin.” Last year’s finalists included a pineapple fish cake, a tomato soup cake and an old-fashioned root beer float cake. The top 10 finalists will be asked to participate in a cake-off in Atlanta on Nov. 24, 2003 and each one will receive a Whirlpool Accubake range. The contest winner will also receive $5,000.
