im) When Recycling Adds Up (NAPSA)—Anumberof schools and students have madea science of finding ways to raise moneyfor their neighborhoods—and help the Earth. For example, the Science Club of St. Scholastica Academy in New Orleans runs an annual aluminum can recycling drive. Smart Money: Recycling drives have helped schools across the country raise funds to improve their communities. Monies raised through the program help to protect the environment and are used to help maintain and beautify New Orleans’ parks. In 2001, the club’s contributions paid for the planting of 60 trees throughoutthecity. Other schools and organizations run similar drives, helping to raise money for their respective towns or school districts. In fact, Americans earned collective one billion dollars in 2001 by recycling their aluminum cans. (Their recycling also helped save enough energy to light Washington, D.C. for four and a half years.)
