As the global habitat continues to change, government and companies increasingly are working together to find ways to conserve the world’s resources. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (www.epa.gov) was created more than 30 years ago to protect human health and to safeguard air, water and land. Striving for a cleaner and healthier environment, EPA now works with over 10,000 industries, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and state and local governments on over 40 voluntary pollution prevention programs and energy conservation efforts. During the 1980s, Canon committed to kyosei, its worldwide corporate philosophy of living and working together for the common good. As part of this philosophy, Canon U.S.A. is collaborating with the EPA on three key programs: * ENERGY STAR provides businesses and consumers with energy efficient solutions that save money while protecting the environment for future generations. By choosing ENERGY STAR in homes and at work, every person can help protect the environment. Canon has developed more than 300 ENERGY STAR qualified products, the most of any imaging products manufacturer, and received numerous EPA YN awards for its Od contributions to energy-saving technology. Ja * The Smart ENETORSG] Way Transport artnership is a a collaborative effort among freight-haulers, retailers, manufacturers and the EPA. Objectives are to reduce fuel consumption from the transportation sector, emissions affecting human health (especially in densely populated urban areas) and greenhouse gas emissions. Canon is a Charter Partner of this new program and the only participating camera and copier manufacturer. * WasteWise encourages business, government and institutional partners to reduce municipal solid waste through waste prevention, recycling and buying/manufacturing products with recycled content. This benefits the bottom line while remaining focused on environment conservation. Canon has received three WasteWise citations for implementing a comprehensive waste reduction program.
