ng U yvironmen 6 PyOneeURCNT Full Speed Ahead For New Car And CleanAir (NAPS)—The largest manufac- turing industry in the country, automotive manufacturing has traveled farther than any other industry toward a cleaner envi- ronment andis dedicated to going even farther to clean theair. The U.S. automotive industry is driving toward cars and trucks with less emission fumes. For three decades the auto industry has been producing ever- cleaner vehicles. The industry spends $18.4 billion annually in research and development of new advanced technologies to make cars and light trucks even cleaner, safer and more fuel-efficient than ever. Here are some clean air facts: Nationwide, all cars and light trucks are at least 96 percent cleaner than their counterparts in the 1960s. e By 2009, all cars and light trucks will become 80 percent cleaner than today. e This decade, both cars and light tucks will drive 99 percent cleaner than in the 1960s. e Today’s light trucks run cleaner than a 1993 car. e All 2001 new cars sold nationwide—approximately eight million cars—will meet voluntary National Low Emission Vehicle (NLEV) program standards (separate stan- dards are required in California, Massachusetts, New York and Vermont). Some light trucks also will meet NLEVstandards.
