ACTION KEKE X Oak XOnXQXanXt Warrior of Citizen Initiatives Leads America’s Promise (NAPSA)—Leaders across Amer- ica are talking about the recently elected chairman of America’s Promise—The Alliance for Youth, former Senator Harris Wofford. America’s Promise was founded after the Presidents’ Summit for America’s Future in 1997 where Presidents Clinton, G.H.W. Bush, Carter and Ford, with Nancy Rea- gan representing President Reagan, challenged the country to make children and youth a national priority. General Colin L. Powell is the founding chairman of the organization. The mission of America’s Promise is to mobilize people from every sector of American life to build the character and competence of youth by fulfilling the Five Promises: caring adults, safe places, healthy start, marketable skills and opportunities to serve. “Through their dedication and hard work, America’s Promise and its Alliance partners are pointing the wayto fulfill the Five Promises set forth at the Presidents’ Summit in 1997,” said Wofford. As a former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania and most recently CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, Wofford has dedicated much of his life to the goal of making citizen service a common expectation and experience for all Americans. He played a key role in passing the trailblazing legislation that created AmeriCorps, the Learn and Serve America program and the Corporation for National and Community Service. He was also instrumental in organizing the Presidents’ Summit. “Harris has been with us from the very beginning. His chairman- ship at America’s Promise will be yet another milestone in his longstanding commitment to ensure that young people in this great country have every opportunity to lead successful lives,” said General Colin L. Powell, Founding Chairman, America’s Promise. News of Senator Wofford’s election to the Chairmanship of America’s Promise drew comments from Former Senator Harris Wofford leads an initiative to help Amer- ica’s youth. leaders on both sides of the aisle. Former President Clinton released a statement saying, “I was so grateful for the great job Harris Wofford did as head of the Corporation for National and Community Service during my administration...I am glad to know that he will continue helping people as chair of America’s Promise.” Such praise also came from Senator Rick Santorum (R-Penn.): “It has been my pleasure to work with Mr. Wofford over the years on providing faith-based and charitable organi- zations—like America’s Promise— with the tools necessary to continue their mission of service.” In 2001, Wofford convened and chaired the Working Group on Human Needs and Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. Addi- tionally, Wofford is a memberof the National Commission on Service- Learning and serves on the boards of Youth Service America and the Points of Light Foundation. In the 1970s, Wofford was president of Bryn Mawr College. He is also the author of four books, including Of Kennedys and Kings: Making Sense of the Sixties.
