To Promote Diversity (NAPSA)—Thereis good news for outstanding African-American, American Indian-Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander-American and Hispanic-American students who face financial barriers to obtaining higher education. The Gates Millennium Scholars program, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and administered by the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), was established to provide educational opportunities for eligible students. To reach, coordinate, and support the constituent groups, UNCF has partnered with the American Indian Graduate Center Scholars, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund and the Organization of Chinese Americans. The program assists incoming freshmen students to meet the costs of attendance at the college of their choice. To be eligible, students must have a G.P.A.of at least 3.3 out of 4.0 and they should have demonstrated leadership abilities by participating in extracurricular activities and community events. There are three components to the nomination process: * a Nominee Personal Information Form to be completed by the student, * a Nominator Form to be completed by an educator and * a Recommender form to be completed by an adult familiar with the applicant’s community service and leadershipactivities. The program will help cover the costs of attendance for one thousand students per year and can be renewed for scholars who choose to pursue graduate studies in the areas of mathematics, science, engineering, education, library science or public health.
