It can, say the organizers of a nationwide bake sale created to help America’s children get the food they need to learn, grow and thrive. With more than 138 million American children hungry or at risk for hunger, Parade magazine and Share Our Strength, a leading antihunger organization, created The Great American Bake Sale. This year’s goalis to register 10,000 bake sales and raise $2 million. All funds raised are donated to Share Our Strength, which will then award grants to nonprofits fighting childhood hunger. Participants have the option of designating funds to hunger programs in areas hit by Hurricane Katrina. A bake sale can be a fun, effec- tive fund-raising tool. Make baking sweet and simple: Try something different— peanutbrittle, fudge, sweet breads and mini muffins add variety to regular bakesale fare. Take a shortcut—use a cake mix or replace water with milk, chocolate milk or flavored soda to add density.
