Veterans Committed To Serving Other Veterans (NAPSA)—For over 60 years, an organization has been serving veterans and the communities in which they live in an effort to make a difference in the lives of others. These two areas—veteransservice and community service— drive the efforts of the organization known as AMVETS. Founded in 1944 as the American Veterans of World WarII, it became in 1947 the first World War II organization to be chartered by Congress. This volunteer organization serves the needsof veterans and their families through a wide variety of programs. Today, membership in this volunteer organization is open to anyone whois currently serving or who has honorably served in the U.S. Armed Forces. One of its most visible initiatives is the network of trained national service officers (NSOs) who assist veterans in obtaining the benefits promised to them by the federal government. Last year, more than 65,000 claims and appeals were filed on behalf of veterans, resulting in veterans and their families receiving $410 million in compensation. To learn more, visit www.AMVETS.org.
