Scientists say biomedical research has helped save the lives of millions of children. Today, vaccines developed through animal research have all but eradicated diseases such as small pox and polio and help to protect against countless other conditions. In addition, research with ani- mals has helped doctors treat asthma, juvenile diabetes, childhood cancer and manyother illnesses moreeffectively than ever before. Achieving these seemingly miraculous advancements in pediatric medicine has not been child’s play. Life-saving biomedical animal studies require years of research and teamsof scientists—including licensed veterinarians who make sure that animals in the experiment are treated humanely.
