Zinc: A Sustainable Resource

Resource (NAPSA)—Zine coatings lengthen thelife of steel by protecting the steel from corrosion. This benefit alone provides a huge conservation of natural resources by reducing the need for raw materials and energy to produce new steel. The recycling of zine-coated steel adds to this conservation because energy requirements for remelting steel and recovering the zine are less than those required for producing the original metals. Steel and zine both meet the objectives of an environmentallyconscious society in search of sustainable materials. Zine is completely recyclable without any loss of its physical or chemical properties. Due to the long life span of zine products, much of the zine produced in the past is still in use, constituting a valuable and sustainable source of zine for future generations. In fact, the original zinc-coated steel cables used to support the Brooklyn Bridge, installed in 1883, are still supporting over 144,000 vehicle crossings today.
