THE LAW! Rewarding Illegal Earnings (NAPSA)—A loophole in the law threatens to add unsustainable new costs to Social Security and Medicare. Under “temporary worker”proposals, current illegal immigrants would receive authorization to work in this country and access to valid, work-authorized Social Security numbers. Granting guest workers access to Social Security benefits could overburden the system caring for the nation’s seniorcitizens. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that such legislation would add about $9 billion in newcosts to Social Security and Medicare in thefirst 10 years alone. “At the same time President Bush is calling on Congress to pass ‘temporary guest worker’ immigration legislation, he is also asking Congress for deep cuts to Medicare,” states Ralph McCutchen, chairman of TREA Senior Citizens League (TSCL).
