Of Botulism From Certain Castleberry’s Canned Food Products And Dog Food (NAPSA)—The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) are reminding consumers about the expandedrecall of canned food products and dog food produced by Castleberry’s Food Company of Augusta GA, due to the risk of botulism. The FDA and USDAare again warning consumers not to purchase or eat any of the canned products identified in the recall and listed below. The recall includes canned hot dog chili sauce, chili with and with- out beans, beef stew, corned beef hash, Brunswick stew and four types of Natural Balance dog food. The recalled products were produced by Castleberry under a variety of different brand names, including: Austex, Best Yet, Big Y, Black Rock, Bloom, Bryan, Bunk- er Hill, Castleberry’s, Cattle Drive, Firefighters, Food Club, Food Lion, Goldstar, Great Value (in Canada only), Kroger, Lowes Foods, Meijer, Morton House, Paramount, Piggly Wiggly, Prudence, Southern Home, Steak ’n Shake, Thrifty Maid, Triple Bar and Value Time. Consumers who maystill have any of the recalled products or any foods made with the recalled products should throw them away immediately. Double bag the cans in plastic bags that are tightly ra/= closed and then place in a trash receptacle for nonrecyclable trash outside of the home. Botulism is a serious threat to health. Symptomsof botulism poisoning can begin from six hours to two weeks after eating food that contains the toxin. Symptoms may include double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, and muscle weakness that moves progressively down the body, affecting the shouldersfirst and then descending to the upper arms, lower arms, thighs, calves, etc. Botulism poisoning can also cause paralysis of the breathing muscles and death.
